The Student Support Services department works to support and create the climate outlined in the School Culture Initiative. One of the primary tasks is to respond to students whose behavior is interrupting their learning and/or disrupting the classroom learning environment. When responding to crises, our goal is one of de-escalation and re-entry into the classroom environment as appropriate. Student conduct is viewed through a perspective of character development. Our philosophy is to try and understand why the offending behavior occurred to adequately address and respond to the student’s need.
Staffing: The department consists of four full-time members - two Character Development Specialists and the School Social Worker. There are three Master's level Social Worker and one or two Master’s level Social Work Interns.
Services: The two Character Development Specialists’ and one Academic Advocate primary responsibilities are to respond to students who are struggling to maintain their focus on academics throughout the school day. Additionally, they provide support during lunch and recess, outreach to parents, and help facilitate character development groups.
The School Social Worker provides individual, small group, and large group counseling to students. Additionally, the School Social Worker does outreach to parents, consults with other providers, provides clinical support and interventions as needed, works with the Executive Director on child welfare issues, and is a member of the Child Study Team.
The Social Work Intern(s) provide individual, small group and large group counseling to students.
All four full-time members of the Student Support Services department provide support for teachers.
Interventions are designed to help address what is interfering with students maintaining their focus on academics. Services are provided to students in a variety of settings (in classroom, in office, in lunchroom, etc..) and are open to any child needing additional support.
